Leading the Change: action not words

June 13, 2025

Change is coming.

On Tuesday June 10th we invited 120 leaders to address the realities of our ageing workforce.

We were focused on inviting those who have a sphere of significant influence because places were limited and we wanted as much 'bang for our buck' as all of us can get. On our members behalf, we can't change government policy that easily but we can lean on people who come, what we ask them to listen to and discuss and what we ask them to action and take away. Our rationale was we should invite people where the ripples of their actions will spread far and wide.

CEO's, MP's, Government and other Policy makers, Journalists, HRD's and academics came together. We provided context with this 3 minute video

We invited Rt Hon Chloe Smith - ex Sec of State and now President of the CIPD to talk about her experience of government and now at CIPD. In her experience she shared an important reminder - policy and handbooks are one thing but real difference is made when people lead. Hearts and minds are key to engage.

Baroness Dido Harding enabled it all to happen and gave the most inspirational close to a day I've ever seen.

Lee Barron MP was passionate in his advocacy of those on lower income and physically demanding roles. The longer lives we are now living might mean longer working lives but this is easier and more appealing for some - not others and we have to remember that.

Herminia Ibarra - spoke about the individuals experience of career change and what organisations can do to support it

Paul Farmer - CEO of Age UK told us how amazing the 45+ group of employees are and how carers leave enables to many to carry on working

Robert Newry helped open eyes to how else we can assess potential given how poor the CV is as a tool for recruitment.

Jane Hamilton chaired a panel and added her own personal take on how her own career has shaped and changed in her 50's

Georgiana Bristol told us how government can step up and support

Mike Mansfield shared research on what companies are doing to support intergenerational working

Stuart Morris - gave a personal account of the importance of being valued and included. His was the story that moved people the most.

Natasha Cleeve couldn't make it but Lisa Kim MacLaren did an amazing stand in job of explaining how the recruitment market is currently failing the 50+ candidate.

We now have action cards from the attendees filled with real commitments to drive change.

If you missed the event, but would like to be invited to future ones - and would like to shape what that format and forum might look like, feel free to complete this form:
